Description

Join Clockshop for a new performance by artist Kiyo Gutiérrez set along the inclined riverbanks of the Los Angeles River, Paayme Paxaayt. spawn aims to offer alternatives to our dominant water imaginaries and to build a closer relationship between water and people. Through choreographies of movement and sound, Gutierrez draws attention to the interconnectedness of bodies, both human and nonhuman, and the river’s historic and present ecologies. Framed as a ritual-performance, the work honors the Pacific lamprey, an ancient fish once abundant in the river, now locally extinct due to the pressures of urban development. The performance will be accompanied by a soundscape by artist Eva Aguila.

Gutiérrez will honor and adopt the form of the Pacific lamprey and invite you to take part in this special ritual to help guide her eggs into the channel. The ritual garment used in the performance is dyed with Palo de Brasil (Paubrasilia echinata), a traditional medicinal plant found in Mexico and throughout Central and South America. This dye acts as a natural pH indicator, changing color when it comes into contact with water.

34.094620, -118.235689
Glassell Park, Los Angeles, CA

The bridge has a small parking lot that is first-come, first-served. Alternate parking can be found along the access road through which you enter and on San Fernando Road. Please note that the nearby residential neighborhood is permit-only parking. We highly recommend using public transportation (the nearest bus lines are the 90, 94, and 251), rideshare, biking, or carpooling. Please wear all-terrain shoes with good tread to access the pedestrian path via a dirt ramp.

If you have limited mobility, it may be difficult to join the full procession as the ramp surface is uneven and unpaved. The majority of the performance may also be viewed from above, from Taylor Yard Bridge, though please be aware that a full view of the gathering may be partially obstructed.

Restrooms
There are no restrooms on site, and the nearest facilities are located in Rio de Los Angeles State Park — please plan accordingly.
