Description

Please join Clockshop for a special Reading By Moonrise event on Saturday, February 1 from 4:00-6:00 PM, with Little Flower Cafe and Octavia’s Bookshelf featuring writers and artists with a direct connection to the Altadena Public Libraries. Our board members and artists York Chang and Ayasha Guerin will open and close with passages from Octavia E. Butler.

READERS
Ayasha Guerin is assistant professor of intersectionality and practice-based research and media making in the Department of World Arts & Cultures/ Dance at UCLA. In 2023, they founded the Liberated Planet Studio for artists and activists interested in ecological research and somatic experiments to mobilize discourse about the intersections of environmental and social exploitation.

Maryam Hosseinzadeh is a community arts organizer who has lived most of her life bouncing between two ends of the Arroyo Seco—Altadena to Northeast LA. Her research-based walks and other projects that aim to bridge the gap between personal memory, archives, and the street have been shared through the Armory, CicLAvia, Human Resources, and the Feminist Center for Creative Work, among others. 

Sesshu Foster’s most recent books are City of the Future and ELADATL: A History of the East Los Angeles Dirigible Air Transport Lines, a novel co-authored with artist Arturo Ernesto Romo. Foster received the 2024 George Drury Smith Award from Beyond Baroque.

Empress Of is a singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer from Altadena. She has released four studio albums: her critically acclaimed debut, Me (2015); Us (2018); I’m Your Empress Of (2020) via XL Recordings and Terrible Records; and For Your Consideration, released on March 22, 2024, by her own independent label Major Arcana and American independent label Giant Music.

Lynne Thompson was the 4th Poet Laureate for the City of Los Angeles. The daughter of Caribbean immigrants, her poetry collections include Beg No Pardon (2007), Start With A Small Guitar (2013), and Fretwork (2019), winner of the Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize. 

York Chang works as both a union-side labor lawyer and a visual artist. Chang has exhibited his work at various institutions, galleries, and fairs in the U.S. and internationally. From 2005-2013, Chang also served on the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Commission (president from 2009-2013), where he oversaw the public art commissions and public architecture design for the City of Los Angeles.

Parking options
There is street parking surrounding the building. If you are driving, we recommend searching for parking on Clearwater St, Fruitdale St, and Worthen Ave. Please be mindful of two-hour parking on Ripple Street. We always recommend carpooling or ridesharing as parking availability can be impacted by neighbors like Salazar and Zebulon.

If you plan to arrive by bus, there are two bus stops nearby: 603 on Fletcher/Ripple and 182 on Fletcher/Crystal. If you are planning to bike, you are welcome to bring in your bike for safe keeping during the event.

There are two all-gender public restrooms on-site.
