This catalog documents our 2016 Radio Imagination program, which centered on 10 literary and artistic commissions inspired by the Octavia E. Butler Collection at the Huntington Library. Writers Lynell George and Tisa Bryant will read from their commissioned work, followed by a Q&A.
Radio Imagination: Artists and Writers in the Archive of Octavia E. Butler catalog marks the first publication of written commissions by award-winning writers Tisa Bryant, Lynell George, Robin Coste Lewis and Fred Moten. It also features documentation of the Radio Imagination exhibition, which premiered new works by celebrated visual artists Laylah Ali, Malik Gaines and Alexandro Segade, Lauren Halsey, Mendi + Keith Obadike, Connie Samaras, and Cauleen Smith. In addition to these original works, the catalog features an unprecedented number of images from Octavia E. Butler’s rich literary archive. Copies of Radio Imagination will be available for purchase at this event.
Independent Bookstore Day is a one-day national party that takes place at indie bookstores across the country on the last Saturday in April. Every store is unique and independent, and every party is different. But in addition to authors, live music, cupcakes, scavenger hunts, kids events, art tables, readings, barbecues, contests, and other fun stuff, there are exclusive books and literary items that you can only get on that day. Independent bookstores are not just stores, they’re community centers and local anchors run by passionate readers.
