MA is a duo whose rich and emotive music is centered upon two asian instruments: the Chinese pipa and the Japanese koto. Jie Ma and Kozue Matsumoto, originally from China and Japan, draw upon the traditional musical influences of their respective motherlands alongside decades of performance in North America and Europe. These diverse points of reference converge to form MA’s unique sound, which floats between the ancient and the modern. Taking inspiration from early training that blended traditional Asian composition with Western ideas, MA’s musical spectrum is constantly developing.
