Join us for the opening of Denim Chain on Trees, a site specific sculpture by artist Julia Haft-Candell at the Bowtie Project. Inspired by Haft-Candell’s previous sculptures of small porcelain chains, this project enlarges those forms to a monumental scale. Each of the eight individual links is carved from foam, and wrapped in strips of denim dipped in Aqua Resin. The assembled work is draped over a series of truncated palm trees overlooking the Los Angeles River.
The Bowtie Project is a partnership between Clockshop and California State Parks to activate an 18-acre post-industrial lot along the LA River. Since 2014, Clockshop has executed over 35 artist projects, performances, and events at the Bowtie.
Julia Haft-Candell was born in Oakland, California, received a BA in art and international relations from UC Davis, and an MFA from CSU Long Beach. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles. She was the first Joan and David Lincoln Visiting Artist in Ceramics at Scripps College and Claremont Graduate University from 2012–2015. She recently attended the Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture, and is represented by Parrasch Heijnen Gallery in Los Angeles.
